All these years I was so sure
And promulgated love as cure:
“Don’t fight it. Decide it.“
But choice is not enough for love,
And love is not enough for what the sentient need:
To love, but to understand.
For understanding takes two minds and makes them one.
To know, but to accept.
Acceptance is the bed on which we sleep,
In deepest humanity.
But utmost, at the thresh of flesh is to desire.
In dousing daily strife of life, to love is to admire.
Maybe one day I’ll be understood, accepted, and desired.
But I cannot believe when I’m so uninspired.
SOLO
To love is to understand.
For understanding takes two hearts and makes them one.
To know is to accept.
Acceptance is the bed on which we sleep,
In peaceful profundity.
Though love sounds like a siren song, beware the guise.
It makes the weak to feel too strong and simple think they’re wise.
Honesty’s overdue,
For God made me, I can’t deny.
I may please precious few,
But please leave the strength in me to try.
